Our St. Catherines Home

We are all connected to a particular time and place in Prince Edward Island. With immigrants pouring into Canada during the late 1700s and early 1800s, the MacAulays were one of thousands of families to achieve what had been impossible back in Scotland and Ireland. They bought land and ran their own mixed farming operations. The dream lived in St. Catherines for well over a  hundred years, and this small farm launched multiple generations who live across the country and around the world.

George inherited the farm when his father died in 1929. Not long afterwards, he married Esta Power, daughter of Flora Ann Sutherland and William Power of Little Harbour. George and Esta lived there all their lives and raised thirteen children.

Susan grew up not far away, in Greenvale. She and Aeneas MacAulay got married on November 26, 1901 and had their first child, George, on October 17, 1902. They had six more children - Joe, Albert, Frank, Clarence, Mary Ann, and Charlie. Sadly, she died shortly after giving birth to Charlie.

The seventh child of Michael and Mary  Ann MacAulay, Aeneas grew up on the farm. With his brothers emigrating to the U.S., Aeneas was charged with running the farm when his father became elderly . After his wife's death, their children came and went while he fished and farmed at home and worked in Massachusetts in the winter. Aeneas had a short-lived second marriage to Emily Walsh, and they did not have any children.

PEI was still a British colony when Michael MacAulay bought the farm from William and Margaret Landrigan for 50 Pounds Sterling (about $20,000 in Canadian dollars today). Eight years later, Michael married Mary Anne MacIsaac from China Point They raised ten children together.
